Gadfly II: Fly Harder

Yesterday sailing was great, blowing about 10 knots, and we made it up Rödlöga before deciding to stay nearby on an islet next to Storskäret. Today, the wind was blowing 15-20 knots with choppy seas, and sailing was a challenge but we eventually made it back to our anchoring spot from a few days ago on Norrö.

Below are some pictures of the last few days.

Stockholm Archipelago on Gadfly II

Johanna, Naomi, her friend Leah, Jaxon, and I are sailing this week (July 27 – Aug 2) in the archipelago between Stockholm and the Baltic sea on a Delphia 28 GT. The Swedish ideal of tying up to an unmarked (and for me unknown) rock cliff in just a meter or two of water takes some nerve, but so far so good.

A Quick Trip to Barcelona

Johanna and I spent the last 5 days in Barcelona, Spain. We had a great time exploring the city and staying with friends. Below are some pictures from the trip, but Barcelona seemed both too large and too small to be really photogenic. By that I mean that there were lots of interesting and diverse neighborhoods that are distinct from the surrounding neighborhoods (too big) but the town is full of quaint alleys and squares crowded with tourist (too small).

Más Puerto Rico

On my last days in Puerto Rico, I rented a car and drove west along the beach some and then south on route 10 and 111 through the mountains to the surfing town Rincon, where I spent the night. I really liked every part of the island that I saw.

For the last 4 days, I’ve been in Puerto Rico for a conference. First I stayed in San Juan, the last few days I’ve been in meetings in Rio Grande, and tomorrow I’ll rent a car to explore some more of the island and then head back to San Juan for one more night.

It’s been a beautiful island with friendly people, good food, and fabulous weather. Here are some photos:

My temporary office (with a view)

When I wrote yesterday that we’d be in the Swedish archipelago all summer, I should have said home base will be Sweden all summer (at least). Today I set up my temporary office in the attic of the house we are borrowing. My office window, as you can see below, has views which surpasses the view from my bedroom.

The trees in the foreground are cherry, plum, and pear trees. The dock in the middle picture is where my borrowed boat is tied up. Here are more pictures I’ve taken in Bullandö.

A room with a view

Since July 8 and for the rest of the summer, at least, we’re in the Stockholm archipelago at Johanna’s grandparents’ summer cottage. The little town we’re in is called Bullandö (we live at the very end of Bullandövägen). So far the weather has been beautiful, I have a 15ft dinghy with a 30 horsepower engine, and my soccer skills are steadily increasing.

Below is a picture taken from our bedroom window around noon two days ago. Nai and Jax share a room with the same south-southeast view to wake up to every day.

Las Vegas & Lake Mead

On March 3, my sister Kerry and her man Jim got married in Las Vegas. The next day, Johanna, Naomi, Jaxon and I drove out to the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. All around, it was a great trip. It was the first time I was in Las Vegas since I was 18 years old. I had been to the Hoover Dam last time I was there and came away impressed again, but the photos don’t quite capture the moment.

This post is my first [gallery_] post for the new WordPress 2.5. I’ve had different experiences with the [gallery_] functionality on different hosts, but where it works the feature is good. And over-due for WordPress. I wrote my own blogging platform chiefly because WordPress had no acceptable photo solution.
